Get the Kleenex ready — footage from The Vampire Diaries‘ sixth season is here.
The CW‘s vampire drama debuted a brief 30-second teaser of the new season on Thursday with scenes from the premiere picking up after May’s emotional finale.
With Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) gone, Elena (Nina Dobrev) is stuck picking up the pieces. (The gang spoofed the aftermath with a tongue-in-cheek take that debuted at Comic-Con. Watch that here.) As the promo reveals, that journey won’t be easy. When Stefan (Paul Wesley) asks Elena to “say goodbye” to Damon, Elena demands to see Damon one last time.
“Elena, move on,” Damon tells a teary-eyed Elena. Easier said than done.
An extended promo (watch the above video) offers up more details about Elena’s state of mind. “Do you know that Elena has some sort of witchy drug problem that allows her to hallucinate Damon?” Caroline (Candice Accola) probes. Well that explains Elena’s vision of Damon.
Season six will open with a significant time jump, with Elena and Co. forced outside of Mystic Falls, currently under a “no-magic” spell.
“The way we look at it, season six is a beautiful and organic reset. The theme of the season is everybody gets to start over. That’s what we’re going to do,” executive producer Julie Plec told THR in May. “We’re trying to take the show away from the massive genre extravaganza, where each season we try to top each other with the bigger, bad, more exciting mythologies and boil it back down to the beginning.”
New additions to the season include Eureka‘s Colin Ferguson and will return fan favorites Michael Malarkey and Matt Davis.
Aug. 22, 12:18 p.m. Updated with new extended season-six teaser.
The Vampire Diaries premieres on Oct. 2 on The CW.
