ELK GROVE-

Around 400 homes were without power in the Elk Grove area because of a pole fire Thursday morning.

This happened around 6:15 a.m. on Franklin Boulevard and Point Pleasant Road.

Although the exact cause of the pole fire has yet to be determined, the rain could have played a role.

According to SMUD official Bob Burns, during the first rain of the season, electrical shorts occur and it causes tracking on the poles.

When the power first went out, more than 20,000 customers were without power.

Fortunately, SMUD was able to reroute power to most of the affected area very quickly.

The rest of the power was restored by 9 a.m.
