CBS is hoping Extant will fare better in a later time slot. Three weeks into its freshman season, the network has decided to shift its pricey Halle Berry drama from 9 to 10 p.m. on Wednesdays.
The later hour has been good for fellow summer drama Under the Dome, albeit less so this season, but the current Big Brother lead-in has clearly not been doing Extant any favors. After a strong debut with total viewers (9.6 million) and a relatively soft showing with adults 18-49 (a 1.6 rating), its latest episode clocked just a 1.1 rating in the key demo and 6.5 million viewers. That’s roughly half of Big Brother‘s rating.

Extant was intended to be CBS’ marquee debut after last summer’s surprise success Under the Dome. The show has recouped some viewers in live-plus-3 returns, averaging 2.2 million, and just over half of a point in growth in the demo, and the first round of live-plus-7 has the premiere growing by 50 percent.
The measure of success for Extant is even more skewed by CBS’ partnership with Amazon Prime to stream the episodes four days after their broadcast premiere. That data is not publicly available, though CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler recently said that it was the top-performing show for Amazon U.K.
Swapping Unforgettable and Reckless on Sunday nights has worked well for Unforgettable, lifting it 43 percent. Its freshman neighbor was stabilized by the shift.
Extant‘s move is immediate, going into effect this Wednesday, July 30.
