Theo James will be going back to Underworld.
The Divergent actor is attached as the lead in the fifth film in the vampire action franchise, which Lakeshore Entertainment is currently developing.
James, who played a vampire named David in 2013’s Underworld: Awakening, will be the central character in the new film, which is not a reboot but rather an expansion of the existing universe. Kate Beckinsale, who starred in the previous films, will likely not be returning. Sources say there was an option on James because of his work on the previous film, and he’ll star opposite two new female characters. Casting is underway for those roles, with plans to start shooting in the spring.
Cory Goodman has been hired to write the script, as The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported. Lakeshore’s Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi are producing.
James’ star has risen significantly since he appeared in Underworld: Awakening because of his lead role in YA franchise Divergent. The film, starring James opposite Shailene Woodley, has earned $274.9 million worldwide. The sequel, Insurgent, recently wrapped shooting, and there are two more films — Allegiant Part 1 and Part 2 — in the franchise, which will all star James.
James also has wrapped work on two other projects: London Fields and Franny. He’s repped by WME and Markham, Froggatt and Irwin in the U.K.
