Students and parents are mourning the death of a local elementary school principal.

Cesar E. Chavez Principal Antonio Medrano died Friday evening, according to Sacramento City Unified School District spokesperson Gabe Ross.

The school has psychologists and counselors on hand of staff, students and families.

Ross said the nature of Medrano’s death was unknown.

“He was a warm guy,” Ross said. “He really cared about the kids.”

Cesar E. Chavez is an intermediate school, serving grades 4, 5 and 6.
