Syfy is looking to expand its variety offerings.
The NBCUniversal-owned cable network announced Wednesday that it is teaming with Nick Cannon to develop a weekly hourlong sci-fi/fantasy improv series.
The show, which will be executive produced by Cannon’s NCredible banner and Michael Goldman, will be taped in front of a live audience and feature two teams battling for the biggest laughs to win points and prizes. The “home” team will consist of four to six nationally known comedians. They’ll go head-to-head with different improv squads in various sci-fi/fantasy-related sketches. A nationwide casting call will determine the “away” teams.

The untitled series becomes Syfy’s latest foray into the variety genre. Should the Cannon entry move to series, it could join Wil Wheaton‘s weekly talk show, which features the actor and geek culture expert dissecting sci-fi film, TV, video games, viral videos and more. The series comes as Comedy Central has achieved ratings success with its Chris Hardwick game show @Midnight, which features the Talking Dead host overseeing three up-and-coming comedians competing in timely pop culture trivia and other games, many with a sci-fi bent.
For Cannon, the entry comes as the America’s Got Talent host also is prepping VH1’s Drumline revival, in which he’ll cameo as well as exec produce. NCredible also exec produces Teen Nick Top 10, Nickelodeon’s React to That, MTV2’s Wild ‘n Out revival, and more.
