CBS added to its pilot orders Tuesday, picking up Code Black, one of the many medical dramas developed at the broadcast networks this past season, and a comedy from The Late Late Show With James Corden head writer Mike Gibbons.
From Michael Seitzman (Intelligence), Code Black is based on Ryan McGarry’s critically praised feature documentary of the same name and follows the inner-workings of the busiest emergency room at Los Angeles County Hospital, where most of the extraordinary staff members confronts a broken system in order to protect their ideals and the patients who need them the most.
Seitzman will pen the script for the ABC Studios and CBS Television Studios co-production and executive produce alongside Marti Noxon, David Semel, Linda Goldstein-Knowlton and McGarry.
The drama landed at CBS in August with a notable put-pilot commitment and was one of a long roster of medical-themed fare to be developed this past season as the broadcast networks look for fresh takes on the medical genre, similar to the way ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder has put a new twist on the legal hour. Many are looking for more grounded fare and true procedurals over genre buys. CBS also has an untitled Silicon Valley medical drama in the works from Parenthood duo Jason Katims and Sarah Watson vying for a slot on the network’s pilot roster.
Code Black brings CBS’ drama pilot haul to five, off four from a year ago.
Meanwhile, Gibbons comedy The Half of It is a multicamera entry about a newly divorced dad who revels in the fact that he now gets to keep half his stuff, which is more than he ever had when he was married. Gibbons will pen the script for CBS Television Studios and exec produce. It brings CBS’ comedy pilot orders to seven.
