SACRAMENTO-

Nearly donated 500 quilts brighten the halls of Sutter Cancer Center in Sacramento.

Jeanne Powell, the Sutter Breast Cancer Auction Chair says the mending isn’t just in the material.

She’s seen a change in the patients.

“It gives them hope and courage I think,” Powell said.

The quilts will be auctioned off this Saturday to raise money for breast cancer research and treatment programs.

“It just warms my heart what people have given of their time and their talents and their resources,” Powell said.

But with all that’s been given, something precious was taken last month.

This wall is now partially empty after a thief snagged a quilt depicting the Tower Bridge, Sacramento River and Downtown Sacramento.

“It was just an exquisite quilt,” said Powell.

And an expensive one.

The quilt was expected to catch one of the highest bids on Saturday.

“It’s beyond me, who would take a quilt that benefits women and the cause,” said Powell.

The Auburn artist, Alice del Pinal, already donated two other quilts.

But when she heard of the burglary, she quickly put needle back to fabric and volunteered to recreate the landscape quilt for the auction.

“The one that was taken, to redo it is gonna take about 30 hours,” said Powell.

But what is time for the artist, is money for the hospital.

“My goal is [to raise] $150,000,” said Powell.

And that means hope for thousands of women.

The quilts will be auctioned off either live or through silent auctions this Saturday at The Sutter Cancer Center  on 2800 L Street in Sacramento.
