MODESTO-

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department is questioning a man in connection to a shooting near the Terrace Trailer Park.

The shootings happened Sunday at 11:17 a.m. The sheriff’s department says a woman died at the scene and a man was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

“During their investigation on scene they looked at one suspect. He, on scene, was detained and is being questioned at this time,” said Lieutenant Keith Rakoncza with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

Friends and relatives say the victims are a homeless couple, Chad Romesha and his girlfriend Cindy. Romesha’s aunt said her nephew didn’t deserve to die.

“Just a happy guy. He had a rough life a little bit but he was coming back from that and he got along with just about everybody,” said Denise Terry.

Neighbors tell FOX40 they heard the shooter fire at least three shots at the two victims.  Then they say he dropped the shotgun and police later took him into custody.

“When I first saw him when he walked by with a gun he was holding it in a manner that he knew guns he knew the safety procedures he was holding it down,” said witness Kestra McClain.

Little is known about what motivated the gunman to pull the trigger. The investigation is ongoing.
