The first trailer for Rupert Wyatt’s The Gambler shows a different side of Mark Wahlberg — one that’s leaner and more desperate than the one on display in his last film, Transformers: Age of Extinction. (One that’s also more given to profanity, so consider the trailer NSFW.)
In this remake of the 1974 original, which starred James Caan, Wahlberg plays Jim Bennett, a college professor with a gambling addiction that leads him to lay his own life on the line as collateral against a loan from a gangster played by The Wire’s Michael Kenneth Williams — a move that brings him to the attention of Frank, a loan shark played by John Goodman.
With a script from The Departed’s William Monahan, The Gambler — which also features Brie Larson and Jessica Lange — opens in select theaters Dec. 19.
