Homewood Ski Resort for lakefront skiing at Tahoe

FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, LAKE TAHOE’S West Shore is “the place” for skiers seeking a more relaxed vibe, unspoiled scenic beauty, lakeside views, the solitude of cross-country skiing and awesome tree skiing—all at an affordable price.

Sugar Pine Point State Park was the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics cross-country skiing and biathlon events. The post-Olympics period launched several new ski areas in the North Tahoe area, including Homewood, which opened in 1961.

Under owner JMA Ventures, Homewood Mountain Resort is being revitalized. In 2010, JMA purchased the popular West Shore Café & Inn across the street—a natural compliment to the resort, with an exceptional restaurant and inn.

JMA also has a “green” plan in the works to provide major upgrades to the ski resort—including a new lift, a hotel for longer stays, shops, an ice-skating pond and public art displays.

This season Homewood Mountain Resort has some exciting new features, allowing it to go “bigger and higher:”

• Snowcat Tours
The ski resort is offering guided snowcat access to more than 750 acres of steeps, powder bowls and gladed tree runs off Ellis Peak. All-day packages with Homewood Snowcat Adventures will feature a guided experience in the out-of-bounds terrain accessed by the snowcat.

• First Tracks Breakfast
Early-birds looking for untracked powder tracks or pristine corduroy (AKA groomed slopes) are invited to load the Madden Chair from 7:45 -8:15 a.m. and enjoy all the fresh tracks they can find off the Old Homewood Express chair before the general public. Participants also will enjoy a hearty breakfast at the mid-mountain Big Blue View Bar.

• Sculpted Beginner Terrain
This season, Homewood is doubling down on its commitment to teaching new skiers and snowboarders how to enjoy their first days on the mountain with the expansion of its sculpted beginner terrain.

• Fireplace Tavern
Homewood’s classic ski lodge on the south side is getting a makeover as the dining room embraces a southwestern flair complete with wood-fired grilled chicken and tri-tip specials.
