The Avengers: Age of Ultron hype machine is clearly gearing up, with Robert Downey Jr. unveiling a new poster for the movie spotlighting his Iron Man character on Twitter and teasing … something eight days from now.
The poster (see below) is somewhat underwhelming — there are lots of Ultron drones and that’s what Tony Stark looks like — with the main points of interest being the oddly unconvincing Photoshop job done around Downey Jr.’s face, which makes it clear that the background was an afterthought, and the stenciled “A” logo, which is a new touch. Of much more interest, however, is the “big announcement” promised for eight days from now.

Quite what that big announcement could be is unclear; it’s already known that Downey Jr. has signed on for Captain America: Civil War, so any kind of “I’m doing more Marvel movies!” reveal wouldn’t exactly earn the “big” part of the tease. Given that Marvel has already announced its slate through 2020, it’s also unlikely to be news of a fourth Iron Man movie, unless Downey Jr.’s prepared to be playing the character when he’s 55 years old (not that that is entirely unlikely, of course).
It’s possible that the big announcement will be more generally Marvel-oriented than Downey Jr.-specific, which opens up a number of opportunities: Will the studio announce the identity of the next Spider-Man or another future lead? (Captain Marvel and Black Bolt are both up for grabs, although Vin Diesel has hinted that the latter role belongs to him.)
Might it be another trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron? Or could we finally officially see what Avengers’ Vision, so far obscured in official art from the movie, looks like? The math on that last one works out — if the reveal is in eight days’ time, the wait could be filled with character posters for Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Nick Fury, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver …
Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released May 1.
