A local family is hoping a billboard will help lead to answers in a 4-year-old cold case.
As the Tuesday afternoon traffic rushes past the site where Amy Lee Freeseha took her last breath, Bobbie Mejias is holding back tears, thinking about her free-spirited younger sister.
“This is going to make me [cry] to be honest, It hurts,” Mejias told FOX40.
She remembers the last words Amy said to her kids, 3 and 4-years-old at the time.
“She told Jonathan that he’ll always be her little man,” Mejias said. “And then she told Adeline that she’ll always be her best friend.”
Mejias said her sister and her daughter went for an evening jog on July 22, 2010. California Highway Patrol believes a 1994 to 2002 white Chevy suburban hit the young mother then left.
“She [Bobbie’s daughter] was insisting on it just because she loved enjoying time with my sister. That was her favorite aunt,” Mejias told FOX40.
Her daughter ran for help. The 10-year-old at the time, sustained minor injuries. Fast forward to 2014 and it’s been a year since CHP received a solid lead.
In October, a billboard, paid for by various groups, pleaded with Highway 108 drivers to find her killer.
“She was one heck of a cowgirl, that’s for sure,” Katie Butler, a friend of Amy’s said. Since that time, Amy’s loved ones hold onto items which remind them of her.
For Butler, it’s the spurs she wears occasionally.
“It’s a piece of her that you know, I feel her spirit when she rides with me,” she said.
While not tangible, Mejias holds onto the memories.
“She always encouraged others to keep moving forward regardless of what’s happening in their lives,” she said.
