Sure, the trailers for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming science fiction movie Interstellar look amazing, but wouldn’t it be great if you could follow in the footsteps of Matthew McConaughey’s character and set off into space to discover potential new homes for humanity yourself?
A new Android app, simply titled Interstellar, offers users the chance to do that very thing without any of the danger or tedium involved with the real thing. The app allows users the chance to not only explore and travel between new solar systems, but shape them as well with the ability to customize planets, moons and asteroids before sending “research data” back to Earth.
The official press release for the app also offers some idea of the stakes for the movie itself, suggesting that players will have to “pilot the Endurance [McConaughey’s ship in the movie] without running out of fuel or losing time relative to Earth.” Like the movie, the app works on theories based on Newtonian physics, with simulated gravitational fields endorsed by the movie’s scientific advisor Kip Thorne (who, it was announced earlier this week, will be releasing a companion book titled The Science of Interstellar to coincide with the movie’s release in theaters).
In addition to the Android app, available from the Chrome Store and through Google Play, there is also an online version available here. Interstellar will be released in theaters Nov. 7. If the simulator isn’t enough to help you wait, check out the newest poster from the film below, courtesy of Wired.
