ROSEVILLE —

From calendars to clothing, every store at the Roseville Galleria displayed a common sign: one that promised customers big savings.

“We got up early to come do some exchanging. I exchanged got the right size and bought a few extra things,” said shopper Pattie January.

“I got up at 5:30. We had breakfast at 6 and then we came here to the mall,” shopper Emily Schwarz said.

While most people made their returns and exchanges, others were spending gift cards.

“A majority of them will be spent today. The young the teens, the Tweens, they are young and they can’t wait to spend. It burns a hole in their pocket. They will come in today,” said Roseville Galleria Marketing District Manager Stephanie Ringey.

And retail experts say spending those cards today is better than waiting until later, especially if it is on clothing.

Apparel sales have suffered across all retailers this year as shoppers turned more to electronic gadgets. And that’s driving discounts on clothing much higher.

“I have seen stores as high as 80 percent, particularly on your seasonal items sweaters, scarfs, mittens. It won’t be too cold here for much longer. They like to move those out because the spring merchandise is coming in,” Ringey said.

Experts say now is also the best time to stock up on holiday décor from stores like Crate and Barrel, which are also pushing out merchandise.

While seasonal sales data isn’t in yet, early results show sales will be up slightly for the season.
