If you’ve been hoping that rumors about Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy teaming up with the Hulk in the third “phase” of the studio’s roll-out turn out to be true, James Gunn has a harshly-worded reality check for you.
“It is absolute, 100% bullshit,” the director told The Playlist when asked whether such rumors had any basis in fact. “There’s not going to be a ‘Planet Hulk’ movie, there was never going to be a ‘Planet Hulk’ movie,” Gunn continued, referring to the comic book storyline where the Hulk was sent into space and became the ruler of an alien planet, which some sites online had claimed would form a basis for a plot beginning in next year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. “There was never a plan for the Hulk to team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy—I wouldn’t want the Hulk to team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy!”

One of the things pointed to by fans as “evidence” for this rumor is the appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy of the alien race known as the Sakaraan, who play a role in the “Planet Hulk” storyline. But, as Gunn pointed out, there’s a far more straightforward reason for that.
“The reason we picked the Sakaraan is because we don’t own Badoon,” he explained, naming the original alien enemies of the Guardians in comic book continuity (As a concept that first appeared in the Silver Surfer series, the Badoon fall under Fox’s control as per their Fantastic Four license). “In the script it originally said Badoon. So you can blame search and replace for changing Badoon to Sakaaran and leading to the whole ‘Planet Hulk’ conspiracy.”
Guardians of the Galaxy premieres August 1.
