When news broke that Neil Blomkamp would write and direct a new Alien film — which will disregard the events of David Fincher’s Alien 3 and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Alien: Resurrection — longtime fans of Ripley, as represented in Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens, rejoiced. Sigourney Weaver included.
The actress who portrays Ripley said at the time, that she thinks Blomkamp is the right person to wrap up the saga: “I would love to take Ripley out of orbiting around in space and give a proper finish to what was such an excellent story.”
Weaver told The Hollywood Reporter at the Chappie premiere about the exact moment she realized Blomkamp would be helming a new film in the Alien franchise, which was while shooting their latest film with Hugh Jackman and Dev Patel.

“It was really organic — we were just chatting about the movie every day on the set of the weapons factory [for Chappie] it was a real weapons factory,” the actress recalled while on the red carpet on Wednesday night at New York City’s AMC Loews Lincoln Square. After repeatedly discussing another film’s potential, “I finally said, ‘Yeah, yeah, you know it’s a pity we didn’t really finish the story. It’s such a good story, it’s really loved.’
“I said, ‘I should probably talk to Jim Cameron about that.’ And he said, ‘Don’t talk to Jim Cameron about that, talk to me about that.’ So we kept talking about it.”
