Crews in Colfax were able to rescue an injured hiker and airlift her to safety this afternoon.

Around 2:30 p.m. a CHP helicopter received a distress call from an injured hiker. The hiker had sustained an injury to her leg and could not walk back to safety.

Crews spotted the hiker and a friend who was with her about five miles in on the Stevens Trail.

Once the helicopter landed, medical officers worked to stabilize the hiker’s leg. The hiker was then hoisted into the helicopter and flown to safety.

Officers say the hiker requested to be driven to the hospital by her husband instead of being flown by the helicopter or driven by an ambulance.

Early reports indicate the hiker suffered a broken ankle.

The CHP says the fact the hiker and her friend had cell phones made it much easier to find them. If more time had passed, visibility and temperatures would have become issues.
