YOLO COUNTY —

One day after detectives discovered the discarded body of 21-day-old Justice Rees, in the Ridgecut Slough, investigators are tasked with piecing together how and why the infant died.

Detectives questioned the baby’s parents, Samantha Green and Frank Rees into the night.

But as of now, officers have arrested no one.

“At this point here, we don’ t have any independent witnesses. The only witness or the person we think is involved is the mother, who had the child. And we do not have anything definitive from her as of yet,” said Yolo County Sheriff Ed Prieto.

A resident next to the slough found Green, yelling for help Tuesday night. Before an ambulance took her away, she told him her baby was dead.

The child did not appear to be, physical outward injuries,” Prieto said.

Preliminary autopsy results suggest the baby died from drowning and hypothermia. There were minor scratches to his head, chest and extremities, likely from all the brush. But more testing will be conducted.

As far as what his mother is saying about the events leading up to that night…

“There’s a lot of rumors and a lot of statements,” Green said.

Green claims she was abducted and sexually assaulted.

“We’re investigating every aspect, every comment, every statement she made. We’re looking into it,” Prieto said, “We’re looking at cameras. We’re trying to find out where was she? Why did she end up where she was? Why was her car in one location, yet she was at a location distance from that car. And her child was even further. So those are the questions that are very difficult to answer.”
