After 16 years of business downtown, Marilyn’s on K will close on November 1st.
Owner Linda Swanigan decided to call it quits, not because of lack of profits, but instead she say if was simply time to move on.
“We decided to sell. Unfortunately it happened right at the busiest time of the year,” said Swanigan.
Timing is also unfortunate because in two years the new Kings arena will open two blocks from the venue. The new Arena is expected to boost profits for many nearby businesses.
Many customers are sad to see the music venue go.”It’s kind of shocking just because this place has been here so long,” said Xavier Broussard.
General manager Brian Rodriguez is now canceling the roughly 70 shows the venue had scheduled for the next three months.
“We were already booking into January so most people that are scheduled to play have already heard,” said Rodriguez.
For longtime employees like Danny Boyar, the club is like home away from home and the staff is like family.
“A lot of memories… nine years of my life,” said Boyer.
Although the K street staple won’t be here much longer, employees are looking forward to watching the exciting changes downtown.
“I’m going to miss it but I think it’s really going to take off down here,” Said Swanigan.
New owners plan to transform Marilyn’s on K into a bar and restaurant with arcade games.
The venue on the corner of K and 9th will remain open for two more weeks.
On Saturday, November 1st They’re hosting a day-long party with live music for their final day of business.
