GALT-

One by one, the code violations at the Royal Delta Inn in Galt are being fixed.

“We are probably close to 200 things corrected already,” Inn resident Ken Howze said.

The city said the Inn was hit with 1,800 code violations. Nineteen had to be fixed immediately.

Howze is a licensed contractor, using his skills and leadership the residents have been able to keep a roof over their head at least a bit longer.

Residents say they stayed up all night to fix some of the violations.

“According to some of the violations, there was no fire escape route posted. We posted those, they replaced some smoke detectors. Some rooms were non functioning they added some of these were missing,” Denise Stephens another resident of the Inn, told FOX40.

Residents still have a along way to go until they have checked off all 1,800 repairs needed to bring the building up to code, but the progress and handwork of these residents over the past few hours has bought them more time.

“Last night, I went to ever room that was occupied. I went through and brought things up to code,” Howze said, adding residents are taking the time to get repairs right.

Social workers were out all day Thursday, talking with families but for Kimberly Lafevere, what they’re being told isn’t comforting.

“He says they don’t have too many resources right now and they are basically just taking our information to see if there is any way they can help us,” Lafevere said.

Galt City Manager Jason Behrmann says the building still has some very serious issues, and the owners are running out of time – just a couple of weeks – to get them all fixed.

“At this point, with only a couple weeks left, it would be difficult for them to come in, get the building permits, facilitate all the repairs,” Behrmann said. “They will probably have to close it down do the repairs, rehabilitate the structure and then open up for business again.”

It will take hundreds of thousands of dollars to completely rehab the building. If those repairs are not made, it will be closed for good.
