Fans planning to see Kris Allen on tour this year may want to remember to wear a pair of comfortable dancing shoes.
“We have done some Soul Train lines,” says the American Idol season-eight winner. “How can I not do a Soul Train line?”
Allen is talking specifically about boogying down to the song, “Everybody Just Wants to Dance,” from his new album, Horizons. Devotees are invited to join in.
The kick in Allen’s step may be due to his newborn son, who’s already been in attendance for a few shows. And he’s not alone: There is a veritable American Idol baby boom, with the recent announcement that Carrie Underwood and husband Mike Fisher are expecting their first child, Allen. “It’s Idol baby time,” he laughs. “They should have a special on Idol babies when Carrie has hers!”

Allen spoke with the Hollywood Reporter on a recent afternoon in New York City shortly after Horizons’ debut at the No. 80 position on the Billboard 200 album chart (it peaked at No. 10 on the Billboards’s tally of Top Independent Albums). Although chipper and upbeat as he always is, the reality of today’s music business, where albums are becoming relics, is not lost on the Arkansas native.
“There is a lot that has to be done for people to hear the record,” he says. “You can’t just put out the record and hope people find it. You have to find ways to put it in front of people. I think people that hear it really like it. We’ve just got to find more ways to get people to hear it.”
His plans include a fall tour with Boyce Avenue, kicking off on Oct. 17 in Nashville, and filming a new video for the single, “Prove it to You,” which will feature Allen’s duet partner on the track, Russian vocalist Lenachka. The lyric video for “Prove it To You” was shot by Allen with his trusty iPhone, he revealed, but for the new clip, he and a buddy are going for something “a little more professional.”
Also on the, er, horizon, is another Christmas song (“We’re working on it,” he smirked) and more dates in 2015. He is also composing music for the short film Fork, and helping drum up funds via a Kickstarter campaign to complete the movie.
“Never stop,” he says of his continuing desire to create music. “You can’t stop.”
