Rhode Island Governor Election Results: Gina Raimondo Defeats Allan Fung

Rhode Island Treasurer Gina Raimondo (D) defeated Cranston Mayor Allan Fung (R) in the state's governor's race Tuesday.

Fung and Raimondo were hoping to succeed Gov. Lincoln Chafee (D), who decided against a re-election bid.

Raimondo became a target of labor activists in the Democratic primary earlier this year over her role reforming the state's pension system. Throughout the race, she had the support of Emily's List, a group that works to elect Democratic women who support abortion rights. The group was hoping to make her Rhode Island's first-ever woman governor.

She beat Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and attorney Clay Pell in her primary.

Fung became the mayor of Cranston in 2008. He previously served on the city's council and as a prosecutor in the Rhode Island Attorney General's office.
