STOCKTON-

Shots fired after 2 a.m. Saturday morning in Stockton, where a man died. Just hours later, gunshots whizzed through the air again, all captured by a home surveillance system in North Stockton.

When all the gun smoke settled, a total of 6 people were shot, 2 of them children.

“It sounded like the 4th of July all over again, what do we have, 4th of July all year round?” said Jeff Lee.

Jeff Lee has lived in Stockton more than 10 years, and during that time he decided to spearhead the Stone Wood Neighborhood Watch. So far, it has been successful. Partnered with the Stockton Police and with the Citizens Observation Program, so far the cameras stretch 5 square miles.

“You set it up to your wifi and all it needs is a power source,” said Lee.

The group now has several cameras, inside and outside. “We have families and kids. We can’t have individuals pulling the trigger just because someone did them wrong,” Lee said.

The overall crime rate in Stockton is down by 12%, but criminal murders have increased drastically. “We have jobs here,” said Lee. “We have to keep alive here.”

When Stockton Police Chief Joe Silva was asked about Lee’s work, he said “We need more neighborhood watch groups, because we can’t do it all at the police department.”
