SACRAMENTO-

A man is dead after CHP says he made an illegal u-turn in the center median of Highway 99 near Elverta Road.

Early Monday morning, the man driving a Toyota car was heading north, when, according to CHP, he tried to turn around on the grassy median, into the fast lane of southbound Highway 99.

A driver in the southbound lanes swerved to miss the Toyota, a second driver,in a pick-up truck, was unable to move out of the way and rear-ended the car.

The force of the collision pushed both vehicles down the shoulder embankment.

The driver of the Toyota died in the impact. The driver of the pick-up truck is ok.

Investigators say both drivers were wearing their seat belts.

Although lanes along southbound Highway 99 were cleared quickly, traffic heading into Sacramento Monday morning was slowed because of passing drivers slowing down to see the accident scene.
