Marcelo became the founder and CEO of Care.com in 2012. The company describes itself as the world’s largest online destination for finding and managing family care.  In January. she became one of the few women CEOs ever to take her company public.

Holyoke College in Massachusetts and her second son while at Harvard.  Her company’s website also says she had to care for her aging parents at an early age. She knows the challenges of finding family care first hand. Thus the inspiration for her company.

She has raised more than $35 million in venture capital and has been honored with numerous awards.  The World Economic Forum named her a young global leader in 2011 and Ernst and Young’s awarded her its Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2010. She has also launched womenup.org.

“It’s really focused around global leadership,” she told the World Economic Forum. “It was actually inspired by a speech I gave at the World Economic Forum in 2010.”

Womenup.org has partnered with the State Department and then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s women leadership initiative.  She is also reaching out to young girls.

“We’re going to start launching programs for 7th and 8th grade girls to teach them entrepreneur competencies and leadership. It’s about developing the pipeline.”
