Meet pensioner Tony Tubb who has a strong case for being Britain's unluckiest man.

The 79-year-old's £1million home in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, may have to be torn down after lightning tore through the roof and set the property ablaze.

The latest blow came at the end of a challenging two-year period for Mr Tubb, who has lost his wife, battled cancer twice and had his home burgled and his late wife's jewellery stolen.

He said: "When lightning hits something it can cause enormous damage.

"It has been very upsetting.

"The house might have to be rebuilt – I am waiting to hear what the structural engineer says about it.

"It could be that the house itself is not safe enough to live in, in which case it would be a waste of money to start doing repairs."

Mr Tubb, who raised his two children in the house with wife Denise, bemoaned his misfortune, saying it was a "one in a billion" chance that lighting would hit his house.

"Someone said to me I'd be more likely to win the lottery than be struck by lightning – what are the chances of having your house hit?" he said.

Even if his home of 40 years can be saved, the unlucky pensioner has already lost most of his prized possessions, and will have to find £250,000 to pay the repair bill.
