RANCHO CORDOVA-

A professional triathlete was injured during the Challenge Rancho Cordova Race in a chain reaction crash.

Bailey Hinz says the driver of a black truck passed her on the wrong side of the road and hit a traffic cone. That cone hit her bike, threw her over the handle bars and onto Jackson Highway.

“The elbow is broken in a couple different pieces. The scapula is in pieces too. I need these pieces for every part of the race,” Hinz said.

Hinz awaits surgery at a local hospital. It’s given her a lot of time to reflect on her crash.

“Wherever they were going, it was more important than a human life,” Hinz said.

Hinz had been training 20 hours a week for months prior to the race and depending on placing to get paid from sponsors.

“My first thought was a combination of, can I get back on my bike, along with, oh my god, there’s a car coming directly past me,” Hinz said.

Hinz’s father flew in from Wisconsin to care for his daughter. He believes the driver of the truck was careless for not stopping to see if they injured someone when they hit the cone.

Hinz said she was traveling in a pack of the first 50 cyclists, and before making it to her the driver passed hundreds of other cyclists.

“You sacrifice so much. You just love your sport so much. So to have that taken away from you is… It’s tough,” Hinz said.

Hinz said all of her sacrifice was taken away because a driver wanted to get up the road faster.

“I understand mistakes happen but would have been nice to have pulled over to make sure I was okay,” Hinz said.

The California Highway Patrol told FOX40 this crash could be considered a hit and run, but only if the driver knew he hit the cone, and knew that cone hit Hinz, and still did not stop.
