SACRAMENTO-

A man and woman are booked at the Sacramento County Jail, charged with felony child endangerment and abuse after their infant died from significant injuries.

A coroner’s report indicates Tyrese Smith was 3 months and 1 day old when he died Saturday at UC Davis Medical Center.

Sacramento Police were called out to the Florin Meadows Apartments Thursday after paramedics found the boy at home, critically injured.

The boy’s mother, 27-year-old Ashleigh Smith, and father, 19-year-old Terry Scott, were interviewed at UC Davis Medical Center Thursday evening and later booked into the Sacramento County Jail.

Sunday night, memorial photos of baby Tyrese were posted to Facebook. The boys mother was tagged  in a link to FOX40’s web story. Her Facebook page lists her occupation as a Caregiver.

“It’s unreal, I don’t know, it’s so sad,” Angie Birdsong said.

Birdsong is a mother of two. She said she can’t imagine how such a thing could happen to a newborn baby in the care of his own parents.

“I mean that would have to be not just severe neglect, but something must have happened. My own kids know you have to be careful with babies,” Birdsong said.

A police log says Sacramento Police responded to a call Thursday for an infant with multiple significant injuries.

A FOX40 viewer called the newsroom Thursday night, saying she was seated next to Ashleigh Smith and Terry Scott at UC Davis when police began interviewing them.

“The mother didn’t look upset, until police told her she was under arrest,” she told FOX40.

Sacramento Police are investigating what led up to the infant’s death. The results of baby Tyrese’s  autopsy will determine whether or not police will pursue further charges.
