One of football’s biggest rivalries helped lift the latest outing of Sunday Night Football for NBC. The Cowboys’ 11th-hour win over the Giants brought the series its highest overnight ratings in over a month.
In the key demo of adults 18-49, Sunday Night Football leaped from the previous week to a preliminary 7.1 rating, a number that is sure to climb with time zone adjustments and already a point ahead of last week’s initial score.
Over on ABC, the American Music Awards saw drops from 2013’s highs — thanks in no small part to the big game. The three-hour telecast averaged a preliminary 3.8 rating among adults 18-49 and 11.6 million viewers. (Last year spiked to a four-year high of a 4.6 rating in the key demo and 12.9 million viewers.) That was still enough to give ABC its biggest Sunday primetime since the Oscars and give it solid No. 2 status for the night.
A football lead-in also worked well for CBS. Though it will see adjustments, 60 Minutes skyrocketed to a 3.9 rating in the key demo. Madam Secretary (1.8 adults) and The Good Wife (1.4 adults) were also up, with CSI (1.3 adults) steady.
Without any NFL boost, Fox’s lineup dropped. Mulaney pulled just a 0.7 rating with adults 18-49 in its new time slot, a new low, while The Simpsons (1.6), Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.5.) and Bob’s Burgers (0.9 adults) all took steep drops.
