Over the weekend, Michael Cera essentially pulled “a Beyonce,” releasing a surprise full-length album without any buildup or promotion.
And the secret was still well-kept until several days later, so in a sense, he pulled it off even better.
All joking aside, the Cera album is very real, even if it’s not aided by a record label or any real promotion. Instead, Cera’s 18-song collection of lo-fi, homemade ditties (complete with singer-songwriter narratives and instrumental interludes) exists in the realm of Bandcamp, where countless other artists, both no-name and up-and-comers, get their start. You can pay $7 to own the album yourself (in MP3, FLAC, and more formats!) or just stream it at your leisure.
Listen to Cera’s album, True That, below:
And in case you weren’t up to speed on the musician behind these lo-fi odes, Cera includes an on-brand, irreverent bio of himself:
“Michael Cera was born in Canada in 1988 at the tender age of zero.”
He also got a very nice endorsement from his pal Jonah Hill:
My great friend Michael Cera not only is a brilliant actor, he also makes great music. Check it out: http://t.co/lbc8sDcSco

Cera’s love of music — particularly the indie variety — is well-documented. He starred in the music-themed films Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, guested on Weezer’s 2010 album Hurley and occasionally played bass for the Sub Pop Records-signed band Mister Heavenly.
