Madonna seeks your help to open Detroit Achievement Academy; fundraising deadline nears

DETROIT, MI -- Seven months after Madonna decided to fund three Detroit non-profit organizations to benefit schools, after-school programs and the homeless, she's now asking others to join her crusade.

Madonna posted Sunday morning on her Twitter page she's recruiting others to help her open the Detroit Achievement Academy, a free public charter school on the city's west side in the Grandmont Rosedale neighborhood.

The Detroit Achievement Academy, according to its website, needs to raise about $150,000 by Feb.15th so it can move 1.5 miles from its current location into a new building this summer.

The school, currently located at 15000 Southfield Rd., already has 65 students and plans to add one grade level each year once it moves.

Donations for the purchase of the Detroit Achievement Academy's new building can be made at its website. The school, according to the site, relies on private donations for over half its operating budget.

Madonna, a Michigan native, reportedly visited Detroit last year to help the Detroit Achievement Academy's fundraising effort for a new building and also commit herself to helping the Downtown Youth Boxing Gym and The Empowerment Plan.

The Empowerment Plan, according to a Rolling Stone story, employs homeless women to sew coats and sleeping bags for homeless in Detroit and around the country.

Madonna, born Madonna Louise Ciccone, was born in Bay City, Mich. She later spent part of her childhood in Pontiac and Avon Township (now Rochester Hills).

Madonna's daughter, Lourdes Ciccone Leon, is a freshman at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Mother and daughter were reportedly spotted at an Ann Arbor cafe last September.
