Songs by Coldplay, Lorde, Sia, Glen Campbell and Patti Smith are among the 79 songs deemed eligible for the best original song honor at the 87th Academy Awards.
Coldplay’s “Miracles” appears in the film Unbroken; Lorde’s “Yellow Flicker Beat” closes The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1. Sia and Greg Kurstin‘s “Opportunity” is a showstopper in Annie; and Smith’s “Mercy Is” is sung by Russell Crowe in Noah. Campbell’s “I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” recorded at his final session, provides a final moment of poignancy in the documentary about his fight against Alzheimer’s, Glen Campbell … I’ll Be Me.
Other pop stars in the running include John Legend and Common‘s “Glory” in Selma, Lana Del Rey’s performance of the title song to Tim Burton‘s ?Big Eyes, Adam Levine and Keira Knightley’s versions of Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois’s “Lost Stars” from Begin Again and Fall Out Boy’s “Immortals” from Big Hero 6. Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros is represented with ?”America for Me” from A Most Violent Year.

Two songs from The Fault in Our Stars are in the running, Grouplove’s “Let Me In” and Birdy’s ?”Not About Angels.” Bon Iver’s ?”Heavenly Father” and the Shins’ “So Now What” were submitted from Zach Braff’s Wish I Was Here.
Rio 2 has the most songs submitted, four, from various songwriters. Films and songwriters with three tunes vying for a nomination are A.R. Rahman in Million Dollar Arm,? Wilamette Stone in If I Stay and Bret McKenzie in? Muppets Most Wanted.
J. Ralph, a former Oscar nominee for Chasing Ice, has two songs from documentaries in the running: “Until the End” for Garnet’s Gold performed by Liza Minnelli and Wynton Marsalis and “We Will Not Go,” sung by Youssou N’Dour, Salif Keïta and Fally Ipupa, from Virunga. Kaskade’s “Summer Nights” from the Electric Daisy Carnival film Under the Electric Sky, is also on the list.?

During the nominations process, all voting members of the music branch will receive a DVD copy of the song clips and then vote for no more than five songs. To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. The Oscars will be held Feb. 22 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
