FOLSOM-

The City of Folsom is exploring the possibility of expanding its smoking ordinance.

If it moves forward, the expansion would enact smoking bans at restaurant and bar patios and inside new apartment buildings.

The City Council discussed the idea Tuesday, and officials are meeting with restaurant and apartment managers for feedback.

“We had asked the city staff to go back and gather some additional information,” City Council member Kerri Howell said. “When we talked about it the first time, it was, in part, at the urging of apartment dwellers who wanted apartments to be completely non-smoking.”

The possible ban is already facing strong opposition.

“I don’t smoke it all and therefore I believe that people should be able to do what they want to do outside,” Folsom resident John Markus said. “I mean, the inside I can understand but outside, no big deal.”

Restaurants and bars are worried an expanded ordinance could hurt business.

For now, the city hasn’t decided anything. The council is likely to revisit the topic in the next 45 days.
