Art by local artists: Art Works Gallery and Artists’ Studio in the Foothills

Art Works Gallery
Five New Artists have joined Art Works Gallery, a co-op of more than 30 Nevada County artists in historic Grass Valley.

Lisa Marie Kindley is a tapestry artist who paints directly on unstretched canvases, which are hung from a decorative rod. Lisa uses soft hues, layered textures and ornamental themes giving her work a timeless quality.

The gallery’s new jewelry artist, Antje Dormeyer, received her education in art and design in Germany. Antje crafts unique pieces using metals and gemstones. Her necklaces, earrings and bracelets are one of a kind.

Candace Ekstrom recently moved to Grass Valley from the Midwest. She tells us her pottery has become more organic since moving to Nevada County, inspired by living in such a natural environment. You will find mugs, plates, bowls and many more items in her collection at the gallery.

Jody Ahlquist-Mough grew up in Hawaii and her linoleum block prints reflect all that is Hawaiian. Jody’s work is strong and linear and brings a new dimension to the Gallery.

Susan Lobb Porter is a mixed media artist who uses many mediums, giving her work a richness only that method can achieve. Her paintings are more abstract than representational, lush and colorful.

Artists’ Studio in the Foothills
ASiF heads into the new year with a new sense of growth and purpose with the re-invention of a few of its long held traditions.

The first is an exciting re-incarnation of what will be ASiF’s 5th annual love-themed art happening. The Art of Love Show reinvents itself as the Art of Love Project: a collaboration with Hospitality House, a community shelter in Grass Valley.

Early this year resident instructors will begin making weekly visits to Hospitality House—bringing art supplies, instruction and inspiration to create a series of collaborative art events and gallery exhibits.

ASiF’s February Open House, on February 7, marks the art center’s first seasonal open house event of 2015. It is an all-day event, from 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. featuring demonstrations and interactive art activities. The center will feature “Into the Forest,” an exhibition of paintings and mixed media artworks by Heather deViveiros, Sarah CV Hendrickson and Jennifer Rain Crosby.

The center’s 2015 winter-spring classes cover an ever expanding range of media, including painting, drawing, printmaking, encaustics, ceramic sculpture, metal arts and jewelry fabrication.
