AAJA: Miss Nebraska Takes on Asian American & Pageant Stereotypes

Hoang-Kim Cung Miss Nebraska USA 2014It’s common for pageant contestants to aspire to be in the news media, especially television news.  Hoang-Kim Cung may just be the first winner to already be a professional journalist (Photo from Miss Nebraska USA by Laurel Austin Studio).

The reporter for NBC Nebraska graduated from the University of Texas, Austin in 2013 and moved to Nebraska to become a reporter and anchor. The 23-year old sees her roles as a TV Journalist and the just crowned Miss Nebraska as positive steps forward for both the Vietnamese American and larger Asian American communities.

She talked to the Asian American Journalists Association about what she hoped to accomplish.

“Growing up, I didn’t have very many role models who were Asian to look up to and it never stopped me, but I would love to change that for other young girls,” said Cung.  “When other Vietnamese girls message me saying how they are so proud another Vietnamese girl won and it inspires them to compete, it warms my heart and shows how crucial [it is that] we have more Asian American representation in media and in pageants.”

Cung dismisses those who hold negative image of pageants and contestants.

“Every group has stereotypes and while some pageant contestants fit the stereotype, I believe the heavy majority don’t.”
