At their Thursday night meeting, the Elk Grove Planning Commission will once again hear from an applicant hoping to place the first of what he said will be two billboards in excess of 76-feet along Highway 99.

The proposal for the billboard is being made by Bruce Bishop of Monument Partners Laguna. Bishop, who also represents Elk Grove fast food and gas station operator Gil Moore, is seeking placement of the billboard directly next to Highway 99 on the site of the Full Gospel Church on East Stockton Boulevard.

The matter was first heard by the planning commission at their June 5 meeting at which time Bishop was asked to come back with some modifications to the proposed billboard. In addition to proposed 76-foot billboard topped with a large fiberglass elk, Bishop also indicated at the time he will seek placement of a similar sized billboard along Highway 99 between Bond and Sheldon roads that will feature a life-size replica of Wells Fargo-style stage coach.

Among those in support of Bishop's proposal is Darrell Frick, owner of the Elk Grove Chick-Fill-A franchise owner. Frick's letter to the planning commission said that his business employs 65 Elk Grove residents with a payroll of $530,000 annually and that placement of the billboard will help his under-performing store.

Thursday's meeting starts at 6:30 p.m.

Go up there after a year, take a look at the Elk and count the number of bullet holes that you find in the Elk's torso.

The irony is that elks have not been in Elk Grove since the immediate aftermath of the Gold Rush. Perhaps a more appropriate piece of "artwork" to place on top of the sign is a larger than life replica of Burdizzo pinchers.

Reminder....this is coming before the Planning Commission. As history has shown us, any decision by this body will have no bearing on the end result. The City Council receives the Big bucks to override any decisions they make and most likely will not even address the problems, if any, raised by Planning.

The top of the sign is really going to read:

I AM GIL MOORE AND I APPROVED THIS MESSAGE AS I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE SIGNS ALL OVER ELK GROVE. . . AND MY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CITY COUNCIL MADE SURE OF IT!

This is just another example of the continuing degredation of Elk Grove. When will our leaders wake up and just do what's right for it's citizens.
