AUBURN-

Costco announced in a letter to Placer County Monday that the company
is terminating its contract to build a store along D Street in Auburn.

For some of the 700 members at the Auburn Senior Center, that is very good news.
“I come here every Tuesday!” Barbara Gottstein, 91, told FOX40.

However, the Senior Center’s Executive Director, Barbara Crowell, is distraught. “Is there a sense of relief? No. It doesn’t settle anything. We still have to move,” adding that Costco agreed to give the Senior Center $530,000 to relocate. Since Costco canceled its plans, that money must be returned.

A county spokesperson told FOX40 Tuesday that the Senior Center building is functionally obsolete and expensive to maintain, hence the building may need to be closed.

“It didn’t matter whether [Costco] came our not… we need to leave and we don’t have the money to relocate” Crowell said.

In a written statement to FOX40 Tuesday, a Costco spokesperson stated “It is our company policy not to comment on specific locations.”

A Placer County spokesperson could not confirm if the county would fund a relocation for the Senior Center.
