Following months of planning, ABC’s The Goldbergs has decided on its season-two John Hughes tribute episode.
The sophomore comedy based on the life of showrunner Adam F. Goldberg will pay homage to Hughes’ classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

“Ferris Bueller (played by Matthew Broderick) exuded cool. He got the girl, he had the epic day off, he outsmarted his teachers, parents, siblings and classmates. And the way John Hughes captured that epic day of fun, it was the obvious choice to send the Goldbergs on a quest to re-create that awesome day off,” Goldberg said in a statement. “My older brother Barry and I had little in common growing up, but we shared an equal obsession with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Watching it over and over was how we bonded and we quoted lines from it as if it was our secret language. We saw ourselves in the iconic character of Ferris, the popular schemer who could do no wrong. However, we all knew the reality — neither of us was a Ferris. Sadly, we both more resembled Cameron (Alan Ruck), Ferris’ hapless sidekick.”
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, ranked at No. 36 on THR‘s survey of the 100 best movies of all time, becomes The Goldbergs’ second tribute episode. During its freshman season, the series mounted a Goonies-themed half-hour. Goldberg told THR in April that the Goonies episode — which he had wanted to do ever since he first pitched the show — was met with “a lot of resistance” from the writers, who tried to convince him not to do it and nicknamed the show Adam’s Folly.
The showrunner first revealed that he was plotting a tribute to Hughes during a THR April interview, with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off as well as The Breakfast Club in consideration. Ahead of season two, Goldberg said the candidates also included Sixteen Candles as well as Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Vacation.
Like last season, the Ferris installment will air in the back half of the season (likely episode 15 or 16, Goldberg said.
“It’s ambitious, too, and will take a ton of planning in terms of clearing clips and getting actors’ permission,” he said at the time.
The Goldbergs airs Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. on ABC. A specific airdate for the Ferris episode has not yet been determined.
