SACRAMENTO-
Dozens held candles and left notes for Deputy Danny Oliver Saturday night outside of the Sacramento County Sheriffs station on Garfield Avenue.
The vigil’s organizer says news of Deputy Oliver’s death was gut wrenching, and he died doing what he loved: protecting the community.
The 47-year-old was shot in the head Friday morning outside a Motel 6 in Arden-Arcade, which was the beginning of a violent day long crime spree in our area.
It was a day that helped remind many in Sacramento of the sacrifices police make every day.
“For me it just goes to show that they’re out to protect us and are never safe,” said Tara Murphy.
Others at the vigil say Oliver was a friendly face who made them feel safe in their neighborhood. They describe him as a compassionate man who cares about his community.
“He was very kind when my mom and I came to him our first time, and he just really impacted us with his kindness,” said Judy Neff.
Deputy Oliver was a 15 year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. He leaves behind a wife and two children.
