A HERO of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York is coming to Birmingham to talk about his experience during 9/11.

Decorated survivor William Rodriguez, who worked as a janitor in the North Tower, was the last person to leave the burning building after an plane smashed into it on September 11, 2001.

Mr Rodriguez, the only person at the site with the master key to the North Tower stairwells, is credited with personally saving 15 people on the day.

He bravely led firefighters up the stairs, unlocking doors as they climbed and helping hundreds of survivors.

He also re-entered the building three times after the first impact, and only survived the final devastating collapse by diving beneath a fire truck.

Mr Rodriguez, 43, has since been honoured five times at the White House and has become leader of several Twin Towers' victim's support groups.

He will be visiting Birmingham on Saturday February 17, as part of an international tour.

Mr Rodriguez will talk at the Carrs Lane Church Centre, in Carrs Lane, Birmingham city centre, from 2pm to talk about his experience on 9/11, and also about what he has been campaigning for since that day.

Residents will have a unique opportunity to hear his story and ask questions.

That will be followed in the evening by a second event, to be held at the Upstairs@Zen Shop, The Waters Edge, Brindley Place, starting at 7.30pm.

Event organiser Andrew Johnson said: "We are delighted and honoured that William Rodriguez is to travel from New York to meet and talk with the people of Birmingham. We hope we can repay him with a huge turnout."

Admission will be free but it is hoped that the donations from people attending the event can be given to support the 9/11 campaign.
