Welcome! The Biological Sciences Division's Center for Research Informatics is proud to offer REDCap, a self-managed, secure, web-based solution designed to support data collection for the University of Chicago's medical and research communities. Below are frequently asked questions to help one get started.

I NEED ACCESS/HOW DO I LOG IN?

  • Please log in with either your BSDAD or UCHAD account. Enter your account as the username (no need to preface with BSDAD/ or UCHAD/); then enter your account's current password.
  • Please do not use your email address as your username. CNetID accounts do not allow access to REDCap.

IS TRAINING AVAILABLE?

  • Although there are no virtual or in-person training classes offered, there are a host of training resources on our CRI REDCap Training site.
  • From time to time, REDCap seminars are also offered as part of the CRI Seminar Series. Sign up to be notified of and register for future seminars.

WHERE CAN I GET HELP?

  • Please visit the CRI REDCap Support site for help resources.
  • Also visit REDCaps' extensive Help&FAQ page from the REDCap home page menu bar or the lower-left corner of your project.
  • If you need further technical help with REDCap functionality, design guidance on a new project, or an initial consultation, contact REDCap Support.
  • Support is offered Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm. Outside of this timeframe, if your request is urgent, please contact REDCap Support.
  • Please do not use REDCap Messenger as it is not monitored for help requests.

HOW CAN I GRANT PROJECT ACCESS TO ANOTHER USER?

  • If you have access to your project's User Rights page, simply search for their name to add them.
  • If their name is not listed, they either
    • 1) have never logged in (and therefore, should log in to set up their profile), or
    • 2) their access is suspended due to inactivity (and therefore, should contact REDCap Support to have it unsuspended).
  • Also, please refrain from adding the user's email address to your project's User Rights page, as this will not grant your user access.

ARE EXTERNAL ACCOUNTS AVAILABLE?

MY ACCESS IS SUSPENDED:

  • If REDCap states your account is suspended upon log in, contact REDCap Support to have your access unsuspended.
  • Access is auto-suspended after one year of no login activity.

REDCap Features

Build online surveys and databases quickly and securely in your browser - Create and design your project using a secure login from any device. No extra software required. Access from anywhere, at any time.

Fast and flexible - Go from project creation to starting data collection in less than one day. Customizations and changes are possible any time, even after data collection has begun.

Advanced instrument design features - Auto-validation, calculated fields, file uploading, branching/skip logic, and survey stop actions.

Diverse and flexible survey distribution options - Use a list of email addresses or phone numbers for your survey respondents and automatically contact them with personalized messages, and track who has responded. Or create a simple link for an anonymous survey for mass email mailings, to post on a website, or print on a flyer.

Data quality - Use field validation, branching/skip logic, and Missing Data Codes to improve and protect data quality during data entry. Open data queries to automatically identify and resolve discrepancies and other issues real-time.

Custom reporting - Create custom searches for generating reports to view aggregate data. Identify trends with built-in basic statistics and charts.

Export data to common analysis packages - Export your data as a PDF or as CSV data for easy analysis in SAS, Stata, R, SPSS, or Microsoft Excel.

Secure file storage and sharing - Upload and share any type of file with anyone in the world through the File Repository feature or Send-It tool. Also works with exports and other built-in file uploading features.

Data-based triggers and alerts - Send real-time alerts and notifications to your team or other stakeholders via email, text, or phone based on certain data being entered or specific questions having a particular answer.

Connect to other resources - Use built-in features (API) to move data to/from your project. Build your own custom software development features to connect your project to other systems.
