About the author

Over the course of his career, Sam Greenlee has been a novelist, activist, poet, screenwriter, actor, journalist, teacher, All-American middle-distance runner, martial artist, and talk show host. Born in Chicago on July 13, 1930, Greenlee attended Chicago public schools. At age fifteen, Greenlee participated in his first sit-in and walked in his first picket line; his social activism continues to this day.
In 1952, Greenlee received his B.S. in political science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After two years’ service as an infantry Lieutenant, Greenlee entered graduate school at the University of Chicago, studying international relations from 1954 to 1957. In 1957, he began an eight-year career with the Foreign Services Officer, serving in Iraq, East Pakistan, Indonesia, and Greece, and in 1959, was awarded the Meritorious Service Award for bravery during the Baghdad revolution of July 14, 1958; the civilian equivalent of the army’s Distinguished Service Cross.
Greenlee’s first and most well-known novel, The Spook Who Sat by the Door was written in 1966, and first published in London in 1969 after unanimous rejection in the United States. It was published in the U.S. in 1970 by Bantam Books, and more recently by Wayne State University Press. This prize-winning, best-selling novel quickly became an underground favorite for its fictionalization of an urban-based war for African American liberation. Greenlee co-wrote the screenplay adaptation of the novel with Melvin Clay and was Co-Producer and full partner of Co-Producer-Director, Ivan Dixon, the film was largely funded by independent, predominately, Black investors The Spook Who Sat by the Door was an overnight success when it was released and was then unexpectedly taken out of distribution. Greenlee alleges that the film was suppressed by the FBI in collusion with its distributor, United Artists.
Baghdad Blues followed The Spook Who Sat by the Door and continued Sam Greenlee's determination to expose injustice and the political corruption that feeds oppression domestically and internationally. Baghdad Blues was previously published by Bantam Books in 1976. Throughout his life, Sam also wrote several books of poetry and plays.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2024I read this book many years ago but I didn't have a copy. This is a book that I had to have in my home library
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2023I remember reading this book as an assignment for school. Very interesting read - this book takes you to the 60's era, civil rights; a young black man trained by the CIA to help defused the "trouble" they are having with blacks in the city of Chicago. He uses his taught skills to help other young black men survive the racial oppression put upon them by those running the government. Such a sad reality; that such a book had to be written for us to know the truth of how one people is treated
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2020I have heard so much about this book including the fact that the now deceased rapper Nipsey had this book as part of mandatory reading for the young men he mentored. After reading this book I saw why. I did not know that both this book and movie were banned at a period of time because of its content. This book demonstrates the power of the intellect especially when it is not expected. We should never count out anyone because of the color of their skin or their demographics. This book proved that. I don't want to give away any spoilers but my recommendation is for everyone to read this book. It is worth it!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2024I love this page turner!!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2021My Uncle tasked me with reading this book when I was 12 years old. Given the current climate, I decided to start here with this book, and I am truly enjoying the book for the second time after over 50 years ago. The book is very much relevant today. One of my top ten of all time book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2017this is an old classic, written so long ago, i couldn't remember whether i'd read it. many of its themes continue to be relevant today, though the pool of the oppressed is considered much larger. it i a good read today, but when it was first published the audience for whom it was written was "blown away". the basic theme was for a man who'd slipped under the radar of the establishment and who presented as a "good negro", would teach young, fit, talented men to fight and resist oppression. it scared the devil out of many, since fighting back against oppression had not been tried on any continual scale. in real life, vietnam, dope and official intervention meant there was little to fear of any plots or plans to resist oppression.
since this novel was published there've been so many outstanding writers of fiction and non fiction, that if measured by today's standards this wouldn't pass muster. it drags in places and lacks the flavor of fleshing out characters, scenes, etc. but it wasn't written by today's standards and it would be unfair to read it, expecting today's techniques. worthwhile nonetheless.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2021Magnificent book, I am an avid reader and I definitely recommend reading this book and keeping it in your library for yourself and everyone you hold dear. It’s a stapler that will reposition your thought process and align or realign you with how things are viewed in this country and one’s approach to it in truth.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2011This book was recommended to me -- It's an easy read as I read it two days.... As an African American woman I could relate to the subject material as it is true for the time period. Aspects of this book could be used as a teaching tool. Some may not understand why I am saying this as others would totally understand. The importance of education but even without a college degree, everyone has a special talent (everyone is not college material but you do have a special talent)....I highly recommend this book especially to African American youth. Not to start a revolution but to demonstrate by using you mind, following your dream you can be successful.... Watch, listen and learn you can be anything in today's society....
