Our Challenge:

How might we design and build a Culture of Empathy training?

"An empathic way of being can be learned from empathic persons. Perhaps the most important statement of all is that the ability to be accurately empathic is something which can be developed by training."

Carl Rogers

Our Mutual Global Challenges

Our countries and the world are experiencing growing political polarization, dangerous conflict and many other serious problems that affect the well being and survival of humanity.

A Solution: Building An Empathic Culture

Building a more empathic culture that considers the well being and needs of all humanity is a way of addressing these challenges. We are forming teams to co-design, develop and be trainers of an online, multimedia, freely available empathy curriculum, training and 'MOOC'. A MOOC (massive open online course) is an online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the web.

We invite empathy advocates and activists

...educators, trainers, mediators, designers, therapists, social workers, NVC facilitators, etc, to take part in co-designing a free and open online Empathy Training Course and 'MOOC'. . We need a wide variety of skills and perspectives. Learn, grow and contribute your empathic presence and creativity toward building a culture of empathy.

How? Training Development

We are using as foundation and prototype curriculum, the book: Listening Well: The Art of Empathic Understanding by William Miller. This book outlines simple and assailable skills of how to listen more deeply and speak more authentically.

Like a book club, each week we will read a chapter of the book and come together to discuss them using the Empathy Circle dialogue process. We then design an online multimedia training to support developing this empathic way of being, mindset and skills. This is an open source training (like a Wikipedia) that anyone will be able to access without cost if they wish.

The initiative is lead by Edwin Rutsch, director of the Center for Building a Culture of Empathy.

TO TAKE PART

1. Familiarize Yourself with the Project

a) Review Project Website: http://j.mp/EmpathyTraining

b) Read the Project Overview: http://j.mp/2qu57Nb

2. Email your interest to: EdwinRutsch@gmail.com

We will arrange a Skype call to see if we have a fit.

3. Scheduling Your Dates and Times http://j.mp/2Hn2nLf

Add the day and hours of the week that you can meet every week for at least 6 weeks. We need a 2 hour time block. We will then see if the times overlap with an existing Design Team or if we can get enough people together to form another one.

4. Team Communications

a) Google Group Email List: http://j.mp/2IeVHMm

b) Add 'going' or 'interested' on Facebook Event: http://j.mp/2HQuylZ
