A Tanzanian journalist being held on “politically motivated” charges is trying to negotiate a plea bargain as his health deteriorates.

Erick Kabendera, who has helped to expose abuse of power by the country’s autocratic president, is willing to admit to wrongdoing despite his innocence, his sister Prisca said.

President Magufuli has offered amnesty to prisoners accused of economic crimes in return for guilty pleas and fines. Mr Kabandera, 39, who has been in custody since his arrest at the end of July, is accused of money laundering, tax evasion and having links to criminals.
