Kenya's coffee farmers earned more in 2020 as high global prices boosted the value of exports, despite volumes declining due to restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
NAIROBI, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's coffee farmers earned more in 2020 as high global prices boosted the value of exports, despite volumes declining due to restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) said in its latest data released on Wednesday.
The value of coffee exports during the period rose 9.5 percent to stand at 22.2 billion shillings (about 202.2 million U.S. dollars), according to KNBS.
On the other hand, export volumes declined by 11 percent in 2020 to stand at 43,483 metric tonnes, showed the KNBS data.
During the period, coffee prices rose and hit a high of six dollars per kilo in December, the best price in over three years. ■
