Study title: Injury prevention in cricket players: the Fearless Fast Bowling project – study 1

Dear Cricket Player

I, Benita Olivier, am doing research on factors associated with injury in cricket players. Research is just the process used to learn the answer to a question. In this study, we want to learn which factors increase a cricket player’s risk to sustain an injury and which ones are protective against injury.

I would be most grateful if you would allow for your responses to be used as part of this research project. The project is scheduled to commence in May 2020 and finish in April 2025.

Who is eligible to take part in this study?

Male and female cricket players, aged 13 years and older, who are actively participating in high school, club, amateur and professional cricket teams.

What is involved in the study?

You will be invited to complete a demographic and lifestyle questionnaire at the start of the cricket season and takes around 30minutes to complete. The injury and workload-monitoring questionnaire will be sent to you weekly via email. Both the workload and injury questionnaires are short and takes only a few minutes to complete. Should you prefer to any of the questionnaires via hard copy, contact us in this case and we will make special arrangements.

Are there any risks of taking part in this study?

You will not be exposed to any risks.

What are the benefits of taking part in this study?

If you are completing this questionnaire because your school or club has implemented this injury and workload surveillance system, the raw data will be submitted to your school or club’s coaching and/or health care team as specified in your agreement with the school or club. In this regard, the early identification of injury risk factors will benefit you directly as having access to the injury and workload information will improve your school or club’s ability to respond to injury and to better manage the match and training workload of their cricket players.

There are no direct benefits to you should you decide to allow for your responses to be used for research purposes. Non-identifiable, generalised results will be made available to all participants at the end of the study. No monetary award will be given for allowing your responses to be used as part of this research study.

If you allow for your results to be used for research purposes, you will collect a “token” for every questionnaire answered (e.g. one token per week) and once four tokens have been collected, your name will be entered into a draw to win cricket match tickets, a cricket ball or other items.

Will information be handled as confidential?

When you complete the questionnaires, identifying information will be captured such as name, surname and email address, in order for us to send you follow up questionnaires throughout the cricket season.

If you are completing this questionnaire because your school or club has implemented this injury and workload surveillance system, the raw data will be submitted to your school or club’s coaching and/or health care team as specified in your agreement with the school or club.

However, in terms of research purposes, only the primary investigator, Benita Olivier, will have access to the raw data and at the time that data will be exported for research analysis, no identifying information will be exported and all participants will be allocated study numbers. No identifying information will be made public by the researcher.

You can request for your responses to be withdrawn from this research study on or before the last day of the last match of the cricket season in which you completed the questionnaire(s) without suffering any repercussions.
