SSU Women's Basketball Sets New Scoring Record

SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State women's basketball team set a new school scoring recording in their season opening 155-26 win over Wesleyan in a game played at Tiger Arena.

The 155 points breaks the old mark set during he 1975-76 season when Savannah State defeated Georgia Tech 141-18. It also was the most scored by a NCAA Division I team since 1987 when Long Beach State beat San Jose State 149-69.


The 129-point win also set a new NCAA Division I margin of victory record, surpassing 108 points set in 2016 when Baylor defeated Winthrop 140-32 .

Sophomore Jacquece Alston recorded a triple-double for Savannah State with 13 points, 12 assists and 12 steals. She als had seven rebounds.


Heniaya Moton led six SSU players in double-figures with a career-high 34 points. The sophomore guard from Washington, D.C. also posted career-highs in made field goals (13), made 3-pointers (4), assists (7) and steals (9).

Freshman Myasia Jones scored 28 points, had six rebounds, five steals and four assists while Alexxus Sowell scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Jalea Gray contributed 12 points and a career-high six steals while Azhana Maxwell chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds.

Savannah State shot 60.7 percent from the field for the game, forced 57 turnovers, had 44 steals and out-rebounded the Wolves 53 to 22.

The Lady Tigers led 41-6 after the first quarter, limiting Wesleyan to just one field goal.

SSU started the second quarter with a 18-0 run as they expanded their lead to 59-6. Ahead by 51 with 3:59 showing, SSU closed the quarter with a 16-0 run to take a 79-12 lead into the half.

A layup by Ta'Quasia Lampkin with 4:45 left in the third quarter gave SSU triple digits and a 100-17 lead. Savannah State ended the quarter with a 15-1 spurt to take a 115-18 lead into the final quarter.

 Alexus Bryant's layup in the fourth quarter gave SSU 141 points and tied the school record set 43 years ago and a layup by Maxwell gave SSU a new scoring mark. 

Savannah State out-scored Wesleyan 40-8 in the fourth quarter.

SSU newcomers Lampkin,Robbi Allen and LeAndrea Gillis all added eight points apiece for SSU while Ja'Brekia Bass had seven and Bryant scored six.

Wesleyan, which is based in Macon, Georgia, was led by Carington Lowe with 11 points.
