Three new principals start year at New Bedford schools

NEW BEDFORD  — The New Bedford public schools have welcomed three new principals this year. Here's your chance to meet them.

Christine M. Pugliese  — Ashley School 

Educational experience: 

Wheaton College, Major Psychology, Minor Early Childhood Education

Bridgewater State, Masters in Early Childhood Education

Fitchburg, CAGS in Educational Leadership/Management

Work experience:

Brockton Public Schools, started as a Monitor Teacher Assistant, became a classroom teacher at the elementary level, then an Instructional Resource Specialist at a middle school

Abington Public Schools, spent the last three years at Beaver Brook Elementary School as the Assistant Principal

In 75 words or less, what are your goals for the school year?

My goal is to work with the staff at Ashley Elementary to prepare students for success in the 21st century.  Together we will provide students with strategies, skills, and tools to help them become problem solvers and innovative thinkers who are able to be productive citizens.  Additionally, I would like to focus on students’ social/emotional needs by helping them learn coping strategies for overcoming challenges that might be getting in the way of academic growth.   

Melissa Rego — Pulaski School

In 75 words or less, what are your goals for the school year?

As principal of the Pulaski Elementary School, my overarching goal for this school year is continuous improvement. This will be accomplished by actively gathering input and knowledge from stakeholders in order to learn all I can about the Pulaski and New Bedford Public Schools.  With this knowledge, I will lead, support and encourage a collaborative school culture that excels in academic excellence and students achieving their personal best through the integration of the arts.

Rich Leeman — Hathaway School 

Educational experience:  

  • University of Rhode Island, Bachelors in education
  • American International College, Masters in Administration

Work experience: 

  • Three years teaching at B.M.C Durfee High School
  • Three years vice principal at The Carlton M. Viveiros Elementary School

Our goal at the Ellen R. Hathaway Elementary School is to create a welcoming learning environment that supports the social and emotional well-being of our students and staff.  As a learning community, our teachers will analyze data to support the planning and delivery of differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all learners.
