Central European Startup Awards 2016

The Central European Startup Awards is a series of events in the Central and Eastern European countries – Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, to recognise and celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit and startup ecosystems of this colourful and diverse region.

In addition to being regional, it is also cross-sectorial, bringing together all actors within the startup ecosystem from startups, to investors, to journalists and much more.

About the Central European Startup Awards

The event was launched in 2014 to gather the best of the best from the CEE startup community, with the ambition to recognise and celebrate all the great achievement of this region in the heart of Europe.

The aim is to inspire, stimulate and recognise entrepreneurship throughout the CEE region, whilst connecting a community of startup enthusiasts, serial entrepreneurs, investors and ecosystem supporters from diverse and complementing backgrounds.

Categories

The 10 countries are competing in 12 categories and each country will provide a national winner for each category to the Grand Finale.

Startup of the Year

The startup that has shown the greatest development over the last year. Either in the form of growth, impact, sales, product or service.

Best FinTech Startup

The most inspirational and influential woman of the startup ecosystem. Regardless of being a coder, a founder or a designer at a startup, she demonstrates outstanding commitment and professionalism in her field.

Best Early Stage Startup

Startup with up to 2 years of age that has shown a promising track based on growth, impact, sales, product and/or services.

Best Social Impact Startup

Best Startup with a product or service within the field of social entrepreneurship that has created the most impact and/or growth.

Best AI/Chatbot Solution

The most efficient and powerful application of Artificial Intelligence to reinvent how business and societies develop solutions to previously unsolvable problems.

Investor of the Year

An investment company or individual who has displayed the best investment acumen over the last year. This could be defined as an exit, early investment of a notable startup, realisation of an earlier investment.

Best IoT Startup by GE

A startup that has shown the greatest development based on a technology that focuses on the interaction between hardware, IT, data and society.

Best Coworking Space

The best place for entrepreneurs and startups to run their daily operation from. An office and community space that has an outstanding infrastructure, great community, and programmes that fit the needs of the startup community.

Best Acceleration/Incubation Program

The accelerator/incubator program that has created the best environment for growth and innovation and fostered the startups with the best financial results and deepest impact.

Best Indie Game Developer

A mobile, console or computer video game developed by an unpublished company that has demonstrated the most engaging gameplay experience through creative and innovative interaction with players.

Best User Experience

A product or a service demonstrating superior user experience and usability. The overall experience of the service or solution from the users’ point of view is measured, regardless of the platform (mobile, web, hardware) or the business success of the startup.

How it works

  1. Nomination opens online: everyone is invited to nominate a startup or an ecosystem supporter in all categories.
  2. After nominations are closed, a shortlist on the national level is announced (picked by the country partners together with their national ambassadors). Peers, friends and everyone is invited to publicly vote for their favourite startups on a national level.
  3. National winners are chosen among the shortlisted by a jury. There are minimum 5 jury members for each category. The public votes count for one jury member. Voting opens again after national winners are announced.
  4. Regional winners are chosen among the national winners by a prominent, international jury board. Again, the public votes count for one jury member.
  5. The best of the region in each category are announced at the Grand Finale event on December 9, 2016, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
